Diatomaceous Earth Guide

Why take Diatomaceous Earth?

Many people turn to food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) as a simple, natural way to support their health and wellbeing. Rich in silica and trace minerals, DE is believed to help the body detoxify, improve nutrient absorption, and strengthen hair, skin, nails, bones, and joints. Because of its unique structure and strong negative charge, it may also help sweep away unwanted toxins, heavy metals, and pathogens from the body, leaving you feeling lighter, clearer, and more energised.

Properties of Diatomaceous Earth

  • Strong negative charge – When taken internally, diatomaceous earth (DE) attracts and absorbs positively charged pathogens into its cylindrical structure. This includes viruses, pathogenic fungi, bacteria, heavy metals, prescription drug residues, pesticides, parasites, and even radiation. These are carried out of the body naturally.

  • Hard and sharp structure – As the fine powder moves through the digestive tract, it gently “scrubs” away residue and build-up, sweeping it out of the body. Parasites and other organisms lurking in the intestines can be damaged, killed, and eliminated without harming us.

  • Rich in silica and minerals – Food-grade DE is about 84% silica and contains around 20 trace minerals. Silica is essential for building healthy bones, teeth, skin, hair, and nails. As our soils and food supplies become depleted, many diets provide less silica than the body requires.

How to Use Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth comes from the fossilised cell walls of single-celled diatoms, ground into a very fine powder.

There are two types:

  • Food-grade DE – safe for internal use.

  • Industrial-grade DE – not safe to consume.

⚠️ Always use only food-grade diatomaceous earth.

Because this is a detox protocol, reactions can occur as your body releases toxins. Going slowly helps reduce these effects.

Suggested Protocol

  • Start: ⅛ teaspoon per day in water for two weeks, followed by another glass of water.

  • Week 2: Increase to ¼ teaspoon daily for another two weeks.

  • Week 4: Increase again to ½ teaspoon daily.

  • Maintenance: Gradually build up to 2 heaping tablespoons per day.

💧 Drink plenty of water throughout the day, otherwise you may find yourself feeling thirstier throughout the day.

A common guide is 1 tablespoon per 100 lbs (45 kg) body weight as a maintenance dose. For deficiency, double this. Anyone over 100 lbs generally takes 2 tablespoons daily.

Best Ways to Take It

  • Mix into water, coconut water, vegetable juice, yoghurt, or smoothies.

  • Divide into two or three smaller servings rather than trying to take a full dose at once.

  • Always follow with another cup of water, as DE can make you thirsty.

Important Notes

  • Start slowly. If detox symptoms appear (light headaches, fatigue, flu-like feelings), reduce the dose for a few days or take a break, but don’t stop entirely.

  • The taste is chalky or dusty, but you can mask it with juice or smoothies.

  • Safe for pregnancy, nursing, and children (with smaller doses) – but always ensure hydration.

Health Benefits of Diatomaceous Earth

People who use DE report a wide range of benefits, including:

  • Improved nutrient absorption due to a cleaner digestive tract.

  • Better liver and colon function, with reduced gastrointestinal inflammation.

  • Regulated bowel movements and relief from both diarrhoea and constipation.

  • Lower cholesterol and blood pressure (some users report a 40–60 point drop within a month).

  • Detoxification of heavy metals such as mercury and aluminium, reducing risk of related conditions like Alzheimer’s disease.

  • Improved immune function.

  • Higher energy levels and reduced fatigue.

  • Stronger hair and nails – flimsy nails harden, thinning hair thickens, and some users even report reversal of hair loss.

  • Healthier skin – fewer wrinkles, age spots, and acne. Silica boosts collagen and elastin, helping skin retain moisture.

  • Stronger bones, teeth, tendons, joints, and connective tissue.

  • Reduced risk of kidney stones and osteoporosis.

  • Bone and Joint Health: It improves the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, supporting stronger bones and more hydrated connective tissues.

  • Better joint and ligament health, possibly due to collagen support.

  • Silica acts as a natural antioxidant, neutralising harmful elements and promoting their elimination via sweat, urine, and faeces.

  • Improved lung function and reduced coughing.

  • Decreased vertigo, tinnitus, and insomnia.

  • Reduction in odours, gas, and bloating.

  • Acts as a natural detoxifier, targeting parasites and viruses that may contribute to illness.

  • Enhances Mineral Absorption: Silica helps the body absorb minerals and retain water, especially in the fascia, which is important for cellular communication and hydration.

Cautions

  • Food-grade DE is generally considered safe, but it may irritate the nose, nasal passages, or skin if inhaled or handled without care.

  • Use gloves and/or a mask if you are sensitive.

  • Keep away from babies and young children during handling.

  • Never use industrial-grade DE, which is toxic to humans and pets.

Summary: Food-grade diatomaceous earth is a natural substance rich in silica and minerals, with detoxifying and strengthening properties. Taken carefully and gradually, it may support digestion, detoxification, and overall health, while also being safe for everyday use when handled properly.
