Things to improve your Poo – No. 2!

Yes, we all make jokes about poo. But it can be quite a serious conversation when you are in pain or need to rush to the toilet quickly. This blog follows on from my last blog post with a few more avenues for you to follow.

11. Use Herbs and Spices

Many herbs and spices support digestion. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory, and ginger is soothing for the gut. Explore different herbs and see what works for you.

12. Reduce Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol impacts immunity and damages cells. If cutting it out completely feels difficult, start by reducing how often you drink. Maybe limit drinking to weekends or reduce the number of glasses per evening.

13. Try a Squatty Potty

A squatty potty is a small stool that raises your knees above your hips when sitting on the toilet. This changes the position of the colon and anus, making it easier to pass stools.

14. Don’t Force It—Breathe Instead

If you’re struggling to go, avoid squeezing and pushing. Instead, close your eyes, relax, and focus on deep belly breathing. Inhale into your belly, then exhale fully. This movement can stimulate peristalsis (the natural movement of the intestines) and reduce any potential for piles.

15. Practise Breathwork

Breathwork can activate your abdominal muscles and aid digestion. Try taking a few deep breaths when sitting down to eat, watching TV, or working at your desk.

16. Meditate

Meditation can help reduce stress, which in turn supports digestion. Try meditating for five minutes in the morning or even while sitting on the toilet!

17. Move After Eating

A gentle walk after meals can improve digestion, as can light exercise. Sitting for long periods may slow down digestion by compressing internal organs.

18. Eat Healthy Fats

Fat is essential for digestion. Consider adding a tablespoon of cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil to your daily diet—either straight off the spoon or as a salad dressing. Homemade dressings are a great way to avoid processed ingredients.

19. Shift Your Mindset

Energy goes where your awareness is. If you constantly worry about your poo, your energy is being wasted on stress. Shift your focus with meditation or positive affirmations.

20. Use Homemade Stocks and Broths

Bone broth or meat stock is packed with nutrients that support digestion. Try making your own using bones from a roast. If you're vegetarian, research plant-based collagen alternatives. This can help to re-build your gut walls. Diatomaceous Earth is also a form of silica that may support gut health.

There you have it—20 ways to improve your poo! There’s even a scale for checking the consistency of your poo called the Bristol Stool Chart.

Ideally, your transition time (from eating to elimination) should be around 36 hours, but this varies between individuals.

I’m passionate about well-being and have spent over 10 years improving my own health. Although I haven’t experienced long-term abdominal issues, these small changes have greatly improved my digestion. Give them a try and see what works for you!
